There's no evidence that dogs and cats transmit the disease directly to their owners, but they can carry infected ticks into your home or garden. Cases of Lyme disease in humans are much more frequent than they used to be. So consider protecting your pet, and possibly yourself.
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by ticks, in particular Ixodes spp.
Deer ticks can also feed on the blood of dogs. They are therefore often found in the yards of pet owners. This species of tick can also feed on human blood.
Tick protection is important year-round for your pet. Inspect yourself and your pet carefully for ticks.
