Winter Pet Threats

Winter temperatures are just around the corner, and with cooler weather come extra measures to keep our little companions healthy and warm! Here are a few things to keep in mind as the temperature drops:

1. Although most of our four-legged friends wear their own fur coats, this doesn't necessarily mean they are properly dressed for winter. Some cold-climate breeds, such as Huskies, Malamutes, and Samoyeds, may happily enjoy a long walk in a winter wonderland, but others could benefit from extra winter gear. A jacket and boots will keep Fido happy and warm during extended walks.

2. Salt on the roads can make driving easier, but it can also harm your dog's paws! Combine that with icy sidewalks, and the results are far from pleasant. Make sure to wash your dog's paws after walks in icy conditions. Salt alternatives are available, and slippers can be worn to protect your dog’s precious paws.

3. The best place to be during a storm is indoors! Snow in the forecast? Keep all your pets inside. Pets that roam outside regularly can become disoriented in snowstorms and struggle to find their way back or get trapped by a snowbank or a snowplow!

4. Pets that spend part of the day outdoors also need a constant supply of fresh water. With freezing temperatures, you might need to provide lukewarm water in their dish to prevent it from freezing.

5. Some pets experience real discomfort in cold or stormy weather, which can be problematic when it’s time for Fido to answer nature’s call. Training your dog to use a puppy pad in such situations can be very helpful.

6. Like us, pets tend to be more sedentary in winter. Monitor your pet’s weight and adjust their diet accordingly to ensure they stay fit.

Even if it’s colder, there’s no reason for you and your pets not to enjoy our Canadian winters! Bundle up and explore the outdoors together!
