Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks cause discomfort and illness, stressing the importance of continuous prevention.

Fleas can reproduce rapidly and for the most part cause intense itchiness. Fleas are always moving and can be hard to find. Fleas bite and such blood and will pass this through their digestive system and pass small dark stool called ‘flea dirt.’ Collected, this stool with a moist white paper towel will leave a red stain on the paper towel, as this ‘dirt’ is only dried blood. Ticks are usually solitary and will attach themselves to a particular location on your pet. They may appear to be white or grey and can be of various sizes.

How do you prevent fleas & ticks in dogs?

For both fleas and ticks, the best control is prevention. Many of the newer flea and tick products kill adult fleas and ticks and also prevent flea and larvae from developing.

What are the treatment options for ticks in dogs?

Prevention products are evolving, and the most efficient are prescription products that are only available from your veterinarian. These products have a DIN code, meaning they have met Health Canada standards and are not pesticides. There are currently oral products and topical products and our veterinarians can assist you in determining what might be best for your pet.
